Thank You Damien

Damien Sweeney
(1958-2025)

Last Monday we lost our great friend and faithful pilgrim, Damien Sweeney. He died very unexpectedly at home in Leicester.

Over these days a profound sense of grief and shock is sweeping over our community.

Damien first walked Student Cross in 1979, joining Northern Leg in 1991 and thereafter walking every year up until 2024. He was an institution, a larger than life personality. Everyone has a personal experience of Damien’s kindness, his eccentricity, his oft-repeated story repertoire, and his inexhaustible ability to have fun. Damien was always the first to volunteer and the last to go to bed.

It is extremely hard for any of us to find suitable words to do justice to everything that Damien was to us, but we are going to try. Over coming days there will be a series of posts on this feed sharing what Damien meant to us. We invite you to join us as we attempt to remember with laughter and with tears…..
